eeee eee eeeee!

i've just got my hands on Let's Stay Friends and would be jumping around with excitement if it wasn't for the slightly dodgy feeling i still have in my stomach from the other night. there's a review of the album on Turn The Page.
i bought my ticket to see Les Savy Fav at the Scala the other day and i'm actually scared that i will pee myself with anticipation when October 22nd comes around. i just hope i don't do it at the gig, that's never a good look and especially not when you're on your own in a crowd.

Les Savy Fav - Raging In The Plague Age (from 'Let's Stay Friends', due out 18th September in the US and October 1st in the UK).

in other news! my friend is at Greenman Festival and sent me a text message saying "it has rained all day, Joanna Newsom was great and showed more than a bit of leg" which is a bit cryptic and creepy at the same time. all this talk of festivals is getting me hyped up for the Carling Weekend. and has reminded me that my tent requires some duct tape action.

in other other news! Dan from Dirty Hands has started a music blog. it's called Shattered Satellite and is already shaping up to be ace so go and check it out. there's a Modernaire on Dirty Hands remix up for grabs too and it sounds amaaaaazing.

result!

well well well, i got into Roehampton University. and have come to accept the fact that i am absolutely appauling at losing. i got a B in psychology, C in english language and a big fat hairy D in politics. am i gutted? yes and no. yes because a D is a D is a D. no because i beat my dad (he got BDD for his A levels) and i got into my first choice university.
this whole exam-result-exam-result process has been awful. thank god it's over!

oh dear oh dear..!

so The Dead 60s forthcoming album has leaked. ALREADY. it's due out for release in January. it's a bit sad for the band but i suspect it'll be brought forward and released on download much earlier.

it's titled 'Time To Take Sides' and i have definitely chosen a side.

the album is wank. end of story. incredibly disappointing seeing as they were a treat to see live, and their previous material has been good. a great shame! i feel quite sad about it really. they've had so long to work on it and make it brilliant but everything has gone down tempo and there's none of the haunting punk/ska vibe left. there's one passable track and one good one:

The Dead 60s - Liar (passable)
The Dead 60s - Seven Empty Days (good)

to cheer myself up i will be listening to phenomenal amounts of Dirty Projectors and their forthcoming album 'Rise Above' which is the best thing i have heard all year. fact.
this band are probably an acquired taste but a taste well worth getting at. they are currently touring with YACHT and Vampire Weekend to give you a brief indication of their amazingness! try them and see.

Dirty Projectors - Depression
Dirty Projectors - Jolly Jolly Jolly Ego

speaking of all things dirty, Dirty Hands have a new track up on their myspace called 'Desire Desire Desire' so go check it out. don't forget the single, 'Get On Your Bike Charlie', is out on 7" at the beginning of September.

oh, and keep nominating!

nominate!

hey kids, you can now NOMINATE THIS BLOG in the Manchester Blog Awards, 2007 (CLICK for details!).

to break it down: email the email address given with the URL (fuckingdance.blogspot.com) of this blog, along with the category/ies you think i should belong to. eeeeeasy peeeeeasy. you have until September 7th to read and re-read in case you don't understand the instructions.

it's cash prizes, which is quite exciting. i'm good at winning things (or rather, i don't like losing).

there are five categories, three of which i am eligible to be entered in. (ARTS & CULTURE, BEST NEW BLOG, BEST CREATIVE WRITING). so get nominating! to be in with a chance of winning, i have to make it onto the short list of blogs. to make it onto the short list i have to be nominated. and i figured that the more i am nominated, the better chance i have of being on the shortlist and therefore winning (which i am good at). comprende? excellent!

some chaps who have already voted for me after an urgent myspace bulletin are Citylights. i posted about them a while ago, mentioning their fresh-faced appearances. then they went an recruited someone with a beard! a beard! i can't say they all look 12 anymore.
they have newly recorded tracks up on their myspace so do go and have a listen.

get girl kill baddies save planet.

sooooo. yesterday i went to my very first ALL DAY gig. i have come to certain conclusions about them already. they should either, a) provide very cheap food, or b) provide very very cheap alcohol, food is probably the best bet.

first onstage was a band called Stars Of Track & Field. they were immensely boring and will never get anywhere with that lead singer. she needs to decide whether she wants to be herself, Blondie or Karen O.

next up was I Say Marvin. i was much looking forward to them and they definitely didn't disappoint. cowbells! very impressed, and can't wait to see them again.

then The Ghost Frequency were up. i can't really see what all the fuss over these guys is about. they were mildly entertaining with their jumping around but that's all.

Dead Disco from Leeds were onstage next and although i had a feeling they were going to be rubbish they weren't half bad. their new stuff sounds impressive.

youngsters Clarky Cat jumped onstage next and were brilliantttttt. i must must see them again live. well worth it. witty stage banter as well as excellent music combined with an excitable performance.

the next band on were called The Real Dolls and they were so dreadful i went and sat outside until they'd finished. i don't even know why they were on that bill. they were GOD AWFUL.

fiiiiiiinally Late Of The Pier came onstage. last time i saw LOTP the only song i can vaguely remember is their forthcoming single 'Bathroom Gurgle'. this time i remember everything! they were on fan-tastic form, jumping all over the place, rolling around, etc etc. they played a new song which sounded like 80s electro heaven. i cannot wait to get my hands and ears on it. 'Bathroom Gurgle' is still my favourite song of theirs and shouting "find yourself a new boy" seems like it will never grow old. bring on Leeds fest so i can do it again!

ones to watch!: Clarky Cat - Decide

friday feeling

so, whilst i sit here plotting a million ways to kidnap Russell Howard and force him to marry me, Channel 4's The Album Chart Show show is on in the background.

some of the artists featured on it tonight are Calvin Harris, some god awful ginger (i get to say ginger with contempt because i suffer from the same affliction, haha) white guy with dreadlocks and (ugh) The View.

'headlining' the terribly annoying show is Kate Nash. Nash's album was released on Monday and is obviously going to slam dunk it's way into one of the top 2 slots in the charts come Sunday.

i've listened to the album a couple of times and although i enjoy some of Kate's music, the album is such a massive disappointment. it's clearly rushed. not only in terms of song writing and production but also with regard to exposure and press.

everywhere i go all i hear is people going "your mates are much FITTAH" and i'm praying that they stop before i actually hurt them. everyone's pegged and posted Nash upon the merit of her shoddy album which is a shame. if only she hadn't gone so far down the comercialised, mark-one shopper friendly, tracksuit wearing people appealing route! not that i have anything against anyone who wears a tracksuit.. my brother wears one when he plays squash and everything.

overall, a huge letdown that has been forced on us too quickly. i hope Kate fades out and then takes a few years to mature and refine her sound into something with all the substance that 'Made Of Bricks' lacks.

Kate Nash - Dickhead
Kate Nash - Nicest Thing

also!! TONY WILSON! :( not good news. a legend has passed away. if it hadn't been for him, well. music would not be where it is today. R.I.P Tony.

Joy Division - Isolation

change is gonna come.

Saturday saw the day many Mancs had been waiting for all year. D Percussion!

after many stops and starts over the past 10 years, D Percussion developed into one of the biggest free music festivals in the whole of Europe. Saturday was unfortunately the "last ever" D Percussion due to money problems/lack of sponsors. it's a great shame and i'm crossing my fingers that next year or the year after there'll be a creation of a brand new free festival in Manchester that is just as good and filled with acts of such a wide variety.

on the day i managed to catch several performances due to my amazing sobriety. running between stages was a slight annoyance, especially when combined with those fucking cobblestones! there were some slight over-crowding problems, stage times running all over the place and bands pulling out which did make for a rather anti-climatic day in the end.
Lo-Fi-FNK were brilliant, as were The KBC and Twisted Charm (both of whom were my favourites of the day despite missing half of both bands' sets). The Whip were crowd pleasing, Van She had all the pissheads dancing away, The Answering Machine showed off their brand new drummer with their twee indie pop, Fear Of Music seemed to have improved immeasurably since the last time i saw them and The Sunshine Underground strode away with most people's musical hearts after an amazing performance.
i also saw a few songs by The Courteeners when i was looking for someone i'd lost earlier on. i don't get them? generic, much. they seem to have a massive following of your typical boy-in-checked-tshirt-and-jeans type. definitely not inspiring!

Lo-Fi-FNK - Heartache

Twisted Charm - Boring Lifestyles
The KBC - Poisonous Emblem

for my birthday i got a MacBook Pro laptop and have been enjoying looking at it in awe, ha ha.
as soon as we get our wireless internet sorted i'll post up the very first Fucking Dance Podcast! yaaay. now you'll get to hear my god awful voice and my sketchy GarageBand abilities. oh dear.

Monday, 30 July 2007

quicktimeee.

it's my 18th birthday tomorrow, woooo!

onto the music:

last week i came across a young man named James Severy on the Radio 1 Unsigned podcast. he's a London singer/songwriter who happens to make some very lovely noise. i know everyone is wondering why on earth we would need another singer/songwriter from London but if this man is anything to go by then we need lots more of them! he is currently signed to the fantastic Art Goes Pop label, so check him out on myspace.

talking of singer/songerwriters, i was kindly sent a couple of new tracks by Some Body. and they are sounding brilliantttt.

Some Body - It's A Red Light

i've decided to go back to Sendspace. i can't be doing with YSI anymore; it's making me crazy.

Monday, 23 July 2007

they call me her, they call me stacey..

so you think you like The Horrors? or you think you like Neils Children, or XX Teens or Plastic Passion or Les Georges Leningrad or Boys Of Brazil or Twisted Charm?

well without The Cravats none of those bands would be where they are today.
with a mere 500-odd friends on myspace you wouldn't think that was the case, but it really is true. i only came across The Cravats via my dear (not actually that old) dad. he was rather surprised certain members are still alive let alone releasing singles (The Cravats released a single in January this year) and running profiles on social networking sites.

their dirty sounding punk is like listening to the above bands all mashed toegther. yes, including saxophone. they're scary yet endearing, and were a favourite of the late and great John Peel. all for good reason too.

i demand you listen!

The Cravats - In Your Eyes
The Cravats - Welcome

first post with YSI! let me know how it fares/plays up/acts like a twat.
ps. sorry for the really lazy post.. i'm feeling lazy.

p.ps. doesn't the beginning of Cajun Dance Party's new single sound like it should be Arcade Fire?

and ppppppps. what is the deal with everyone bumming Windmill? i can't be the only person who thinks he's a bit rubbish.
