a quickie!

so I've been in work for 8 bloody hours today. the things we'll do for money. fucking waitressing. it makes me despise humanity most of the time.

but sometimes i just adore people and the wonderful things they do. like making music for me to dance to.

me and emma (my bizarre prostitution fanzine partner in crime) had lots of arguments yesterday over what to put on the CD that is going to be played in between sets for our band night tomorrow. she didn't want it too dancey or songs that were "too long" and i didn't want it too heavy.

here's how we got on, and some are available to download.

1. Low Mode - Goose
2. NY Lipps - Soulwax
3. W.A.Y.U.H (SMD Remix) - The Rapture
4. I Am Xray - To My Boy
5. Tree Friend Tree Foe (Kissy Sell Out Remix) - Bolt Action Five
6. Rave Dave - Trash Fashion
7. Space And The Woods - Late Of The Pier
8. Change Channel - Lo-Fi-Fnk
9. The Magic Position - Patrick Wolf
10. Latchmere - The Maccabees
11. You Could Easily Have Me - Metronomy
12. Noise Won't Stop - Shy Child13. Air War - Crystal Castles
14. We Share Our Mother's Health - The Knife
15. Face (Lo-Fi-Fnk Remix) - The Black Ghosts
16. Break Dance Hunx (Market Value Mix) - Kids On TV
17. Yawn, Yawn, Yawn - Les Savy Fav
18. Katsuki & The Stilettoed Stranger Remix - Elle Milano
19. Pull Out - Death From Above 1979
20. Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above - CSS
21. Helicopter (Whitey Version) - Bloc Party

pretty dancey, but there's about 50 other gems I would have liked to have put on there.
if that tracklisting, the sunshine, and cheap doubles doesn't get people dancing then i don't know what will!

maybe if i get bored mid-week i'll upload the whole thing as a zip file.

because I'm so excited that I am seeing Devo here's a track.

Devo - Uncontrollable Urge

if you don't like it, you're probably deaf or lying. or dead inside.

so! Elle Milano. the first time I heard them was on one of ArtRockers' compliations. and I thought "who the fuck is this, they are fantastic". I was blown away by them, I must admit. they've been compared to Test Icicles, which, if you concentrate hard they might sound like every now and then. but they're better than that, and are far less of a joke.
they are going to be releasing an album sometime this year, mostly brand new material, and I for one cannot wait.

Elle Milano - Katsuki & The Stilettoed Stranger Remix

Elle Milano - Men Are Bastards

you can pretty much find a pile of their stuff on Limewire, and they have some stuff up for download on the myspace.

again, my eyes are falling out of my head so I'm going to cut this one short. especially seeing as I have had a few glasses of wine and have to be in work at 10am tomorrow. joy!

modern art, banana bikes, yannis from foals, and flyposting.

this entry is going to be so jam-packed I might split it into two..

so I went to London! it was (as usual) brilliant. but do not try to ride those banana bikes in a skirt. it doesn't work so well and you'll just end up with holes and ladders in your tights. we went to the Tate Modern. erm. I really don't "get" modern art. but I went on those slides. and I squealed all the way down Level 5. the exhibition ends on Friday so tough luck to those who haven't been on them yet!

I received a (hand delivered!!) package from Indigo DJs today. it contained a couple of badges, and some back issues of their "joke" fanzine. it's pretty well made for a joke. check them out on myspace, they do DJ sets at various places in Manchester.

tonight I went flyposting. with a carrier bag full of paste. classy stuff! I am officially retiring from this promoting gigs malarky after Sunday. it's an amazing amount of effort (and I don't even know if it's worth it yet - I suspect it will be). but I'm lazy. I think this is probably the most illegal thing I've ever done. £5000 fine if you get caught..

I am going to see Devo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

who the fuck cares about The Libs reuniting?? (rhetorical question, don't answer it fools)

I am seeing Devo at Manchester Apollo June 23rd with my good old dad. he saw them in 1979 and almost had a fit when I said they were coming back to the UK.

now. onto my selected music for today!

FOALS. it had to be them really.
the interview went very well; Yannis is a lovely chap. here's some snippets:

"I am a big legs man".
"There's no way I'm going bald".
"Once we played to one man and his mum and a bowl of tuna pasta".
"Playing on kitchen surfaces is the best".
"I think I'm going to get a massive squid tattoo".

there's many more wicked quotes but I'm tired and you'll have to read my High Voltage feature when it's done, and then after that I'll post up the whole thing (including the bit where we got interrupted by two people looking for somewhere to go in Gay Village).

Foals - Balloons

Hummer is out on Monday so go and buy it.

I'm actually falling asleep at the keyboard so tomorrow I'll make a shiny post filled with music rather than stuff about my escapades with paste and bikes.

Elle Milano would have filled a lovely space right here...

to fill the void until tomorrow (the morning, rather) here's a new song by Klaxons (it's one of the B-sides to Gravity's Rainbow I think).

Klaxons - Electrickery

as promised

I said I'd continue the electro-electronica theme over into today and that is exactly what I shall do.

first up! The Blow. I don't know who you are or what you do (or I might, hello people I know) but you have to listen to The Blow. I could insanely ramble about them for hours. there's two of them (is it me or am I writing about a lot of duos?) and they are fantastic. they aren't really electronica, more like a keyboard made out of candyfloss. pair that with Khaela Maricich's dulcet tones, some handclaps and fierce beats and you have yourself The Blow.
one half of them (the Jona Bechtolt half) is also known as Y.A.C.H.T so check that out too.

The Blow - The Love That I Crave
The Blow - Pile Of Gold

I also heavily recommend you find 'Hey Boy', 'Hock It', 'The Long List Of Girls' and everything else by them. just. everything.

now to I Was A Cub Scout. they are hotly tipped to do great things, and I'd even say they have already done great things. and they're erm.. a duo. Kerrang! said they sound like "keyboard-led emo" hahaha. gotta love that.
I think the first time I heard them was on John K's Xposure on XFM (the best radio show ever??) sometime last September. I'm pretty sure 'This Is Not A Crate' was the track. but I fell in love with them straight away. it's danceable indie pop music made with bleeps and bloops. pure genius. they're also on to play Download Festival (which I think is a little weird but there you go).

I Was A Cub Scout - Part II

I Was A Cub Scout - This Is Not A Crate

if you like what you hear please do BUY things from said artists and bands.

that's it for today, and unfortunately tomorrow also! I am in London for the day and therefore won't have computer access. I'll be too busy on those slides at the Tate (I heard someone got stuck in one!). but I'll be back late Thursday evening, with some snippets from my interview with the excellent Foals which is for a feature I'm writing for High Voltage. woop.

oh! I almost forgot. apparently Jack Penate is supporting The Maccabees on tour. how excellent!

blog up blog down, blog it all around

as everyone is well aware, the new Arctic Monkeys album has leaked. I downloaded it last night and listened to it all in one sitting. in a way they have completely avoided all the pressure usually put on bands releasing their second album (second album-syndrome) by releasing it relatively quickly. or it seems quickly anyway. the only track that stood out for me has to be '505'. everyone is banging on about it, and I am inclined to agree; it's really very good. the rest is average.
(haha that picture still has "the fat one" in it).

Arctic Monkeys - 505 (for those few who don't have it yet)

when Arctic Monkeys first came on the scene (hitting it big around October '05) everyone was dropping the word 'MYSPACE'. although I'm not entirely sure why with the Monkeys (their rapid success was more due to file sharing than Myspace).
sure, it's good for listening to the bands you already are well aware of, but is it any good for scouting for talent? I'm actually leaning more towards "no". simply because there are so many millions of bands it is practically impossible to find the diamonds in the rough (apologies for the Aladdin reference - I've been watching that Top 100 Musicals thing).

however! there's occassionally (i.e. once in a fucking blue moon occassionally) a band that adds you that is actually really really good. this happened to me with a band called Alcoholiday about a month ago.
they're from Arizona, America and there's two of them. I have no idea of how "big" they are over in the States but I had never heard of them before they added me (they incidentally only have a mere 63 listeners on Last.Fm). I'm very glad they did. they make wonderful electronica that I just can't get enough of. if you like Thom Yorke, or the Some Body tracks I posted up a few entries ago this is definitely music for you. check them out!

Alcoholiday - The Honey In Your Tea
Alcoholiday - A Lifeblood

now, I have a track that I want to share with everyone (everyone in the whole world).
I came across it when I downloaded a compilation called 'This Is Not The 80s; A Nu Wave Electro Compilation' (also featuring the likes of ADULT. and Ellen Allien and is well worth finding by the way!)
I have absolutely no knowledge of the band/artist except that he/she/they are playing at Eurocultured Festival in Manchester at the end of May. but this track is amazing. I want to start DJing just so I can play it to people and make them dance to it. it causes that kind of infectious dancing. there's no way I can describe it except "MINT".

I-F - Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass

this has been a rather abrupt and rushed post today! I know this isn't the most detailed or informative of blogs but thanks for reading anyway! i've just hit 500 page views which isn't half bad for my seventh post in seven days. :)
tomorrow I'll be continuing the electro-electronica theme with tracks from I Was A Cub Scout and moooore.

oh you young things!

it's Easter. I was struggling like mad to think of an Easter theme. and this is what I came up with. ermm, it's not really to do with Easter but today's theme is Young artists/bands, (i.e. the obligatory Cajun Dance Party post). to make this more exciting or whatever I have chosen artists/bands who are younger/the same age as me (which is a pitful 17 years of age).

so. Cajun Dance Party. these guys are currently everyone's favourite "I liked this band waaaaaaay before you did" band. I am admitting right here and now that I only started to listen to this band last May. which is scarily almost a year ago. with their debut single coming out a week tomorrow, it seems like the world is at their feet. CDP make delicious indie pop. there is something about them completely different from all the boring stuff that you will get recommended by your Last.Fm thingy majiggy. 'The Next Untouchable' is out April 16th on the superb Way Out West label.

Cajun Dance Party - Amylase
Cajun Dance Party - Buttercups

more kids! Jack And The Free Trees. how I adore this band. they have to be the funniest people I have ever come across also. and I love how George's mum sent me an email about the laws on buying alcohol for minors one night after he was sick all over his house. they're like my little brothers, but more fun than that. they actually play decent music too, I'm not just bumming them for no reason.
I've previously described them as being like a weird kind of ¡Forward, Russia!-Bloc Party hybrid, if there could ever be such a thing.
in five years time they'd like to own a farm.

Jack And The Free Trees - Paths
Jack And The Free Trees - 31.08.06

Brille has to be one of the best record labels around. they have impeccable taste when it comes to picking who they sign. Good Shoes, The Knife, Envelopes, Whirlwind Heat... and the latest signing, Operator Please an Australian outfit. my god when I first heard them I was like "who is this and why haven't they been in my life forever?". they aren't even old enough to swear (or play their scheduled slot at White Heat on the 17th April) but they have made me dance like crazy. they're a little like a more structured version of Be Your Own Pet. crashing cymbals and quick guitars topped off with vocals that are older than their years.

Operator Please - Get What You Want
Operator Please - Crash Tragic

everyone else has mentioned her so now it's my turn. Laura Marling. same age as me, yet infinitely more talented (cry cry). if you could bottle her greatness and sell it I'm pretty sure you could make a fortune. there's a load of singer-songwriters around at the minute but Laura has that spark; there's something so raw about her music, but it remains beautiful at the same time.

Laura Marling - Mexico
Laura Marling - London Town

I'm sure there are tons of other bands out there younger than me, so please feel free to bring them to my attention by screaming in a comment "OH MY GOD YOU MISSED OUT *BLAHDEEBLAH*".
and happy Jesus Zombie Day.

well well well.

I have just signed up to that LAST.FM thingy. it's a bit weird, especially those shoutboxes. the instantenous-ness (wtf?) of it all is kind of creepy.

anyhow, I have plenty to ramble on about today. I have been filling myself up on chocolate and consequently suffering the effects. gutted.

as much as I love finding brand new bands, there are some bands that earn a place in your heart and will stay there for a long long time. a band that has been a love of mine for about a year and a half is Every Move A Picture. they're from California but they really should be from the UK. at least I bloody wish they were. they were here this time last year, touring with ¡Forward, Russia! and another visit is well overdue. they have been recording songs for their second album so hopefully they'll bring it over here. jerky guitars and clever lyrics are the backbone of this band. they have something to say and they do it well and make you want to dance at the same time.

i also love that they have Barack Obama in their top friends on myspace.. right beside yours truly hahah.

Chemical Burns (this was my summer song for 2006)

you can buy their album 'Heart=Weapon' on iTunes.

now for something slightly more strange. The Duloks. erm. they wear shorts and knee length socks and sing songs about the game Gauntlet and about fish and Mick Jagger. I'd kill to see a live show because I'm sure it'd be packed with exciting things. and I want to see how they turn 2 minute comedy songs into stomping tracks fit for dancing.

Bad Vegetarian

you can buy tracks from their website.

short and sweet today, just like Easter!

15GB and counting

whilst reading through a mass amount of music blogs I came across All Things Go. and through this I came across Foreign Islands. what Adrian says ("If you dig Les Savy Fav, Thunderbirds Are Now!, or any other band that flawlessly brings a punk-rock attitude to the dance floor, then you will absolutely love Foreign Islands") is completely and utterly true. as an adoring Les Savy Fav fan, I felt it my duty to download the two tracks up on ATG. this was definitely the right decision.

I've been downloading a sik amount of podcasts lately, and it's resulted in my 15GB iPod being filled up within a few days. twisted. probably the hottest podcast around is Filthy Few. always on the latest and greatest, it brings you tracks by some of the best new bands and artists around. I've fallen in love with the Toxic Avenger remix of a SEIK track at the start of podcast number 14. I just can't wait to get my hands and ears all over it properly. I might even take it to bed with me. kinky.

the lovely High Voltage sent me some promos to review, and I did just that. however, the only track that really stood out for me was by Micky P And The Dudes. he's a chap from Leeds and is well worth checking out. I described the particular track I was to review as sounding like "as if someone has broken the hearts of The Pigeon Detectives and given them acoustic guitars and a poetry book".

Susan May

the other day I made a mixtape for a friend of mine who lives in America. I so happened to title this mixtape "Why British Music Is Better Than American Music". not that it's a competition or anything..
featured on the CD is the lovely Popular Workshop. the tracks on their new EP sound a little VEGC-esque. not that I'm complaining, I adore VEGC. if you've ever seen Pop. 'Shop live you will know that the dirty rhythms and piercing guitars are present in full force at all times with this band. they are a marvel to watch, even if you and the headlining band at the gig are the only ones doing so. I'm not sure that they have a sound that will make the majority go "ooooh" but they certainly push my buttons.

Channels
Son Of A Dog

you can find out how to buy their new EP from HERE. or the Pop. 'Shop myspace.

phew!

night's not over yet

so I have just got back from seeing Modernaire at the Dry Bar. it was fabulous, but I don't really want to start saying how much I love them because I need to save that for April 15th when they play at Joshua Brooks in Manchester as part of a gig for my fanzine.

To My Boy's album has leaked. and I've been listening to it almost nonstop for the past 24 hours.
I'd post up 'Model' however I don't know how appreciative the record label or the band would be. I'm pretty sure that's going to be the next single so you'll just have to be patient to hear its genius-ness.

tonight I'd like to talk about Clarky Cat. I can't see why they won't hit the big time in the next twelve months. they've been pushed underneath the guise of "new rave" and all that goes with it (neon things, glowsticks, more neon things, logo tshirts, erm.. more neon) BUT they aren't really "new rave", despite their appearance (they wear neon things). they are much more guitar rather than keyboard centered. fresh vocals from the band are matched with short, punchy guitar riffs and a bassline that will leave you trembling. I love it. the following track is exactly that: short and hard hitting. anyone who does not want to dance to it must be on crack. or not on crack. one of the two.

A Reason

I am also going to chat a bit about Some Body. he's one lad from daaaahn saaafff, and he does wonderful things with a computer. he's what Get Cape Wear Cape Fly would sound like if he was smacked round the head with the entire genre of electronica. yeah, like that. but even better. managed by boy-about-town Sahil, I'm sure that Some Body will be in all the right places at all the right times and quickly work his way to where he belongs: in all of your hearts and heads.

Oceana
Moth

this is getting quite fun, all this blogging. let's hope my enthusiasm doesn't run out too soon.

seeing as i have the hang of things...

as my eagerness continues, this blog shall be updated very frequently. almost immediately after I had posted a post last night, I wanted to do another one. crazy.

I want to talk to you about Pete And The Pirates. I don't know that much about them. except that they come from Reading and that their music is undeniably beautiful. I was recommended them by Dan from Dirtyhands who said something about sounding like a cross between some band and someone else (I've forgotten who; I have a memory like a sieve). anyway. they are top notch, I like them very much. I have yet to see them live but I am sure that their performances are delightful.

they are a romantic fusion of a summer's day, folk music and poetry. listen and love:

What's On

Ill Love

you can buy their EPs from Stolen Downloads.

I would also like to talk about CityLights. I saw them a few weeks ago, and I have to admit that I don't actually remember watching them perform. but I was definitely definitely there (I might have been a bit drunk). anyway. they are from a sunny place called Warrington where dreams come true (this is sarcastic for those of you who don't know about Warrington; it's shit). and they are all about 12 years old. in a good way.

they play upbeat indie pop with that added bit of innocence. you know, like those smoothies. they are pure or something. I like them because their music is simple and it isn't trying to impress, or be the next big thing. they're just doing it for the love of playing.

The City Lights

however, I strongly recommend that you go to their myspace and listen to 'She's A Disco Nightmare' because it's the best of the three up by far.
